The Ngorongoro Crater is the most unique wildlife reserve in the world. An extinct volcano of 260 km² — cut off from the outside world — permanently houses one of the highest animal concentrations on earth. Here lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo and the rare black rhino all live within the same enclosed arena.

Year-round

Big Five + black rhino

On the 260 km² crater floor approximately 25,000 animals live permanently. The density is so high that on an average day you can see all Big Five. Jonas' advice: leave early, before 7am.

Ngoitokitok Springs

Morning & afternoon

Hippos & flamingos

The permanent waterhole in the centre of the crater is a magnet for hippos, elephants and waders. Perfect spot for a lunch break — and for spotting the black rhino that regularly drinks here.

Lerai Forest

Elephants & leopards

This dense acacia forest in the south of the crater is one of the best-kept secrets. Large elephant bulls with enormous tusks shelter here during the day. Leopards sit high in the trees — you look up, not just horizontally.

Serengeti + Ngorongoro (5–7 dagen)

"I have spent thousands of days in the Ngorongoro Crater and it never bores me. But my secret: go early. The morning in the crater is magic — the mist hangs low, the animals are active and the other tourists are still sleeping. That hour before 8am is where the real experience lies."

Frequently asked questions about the Ngorongoro safari

How likely is it to see the black rhino?+
About 30–40 black rhinos live in the crater — one of the last wild populations in the world. With Jonas at the wheel, the chance of a sighting is approximately 70–80%. He knows exactly where they graze in the morning and how to approach them without disturbing them.
Can you spend the night in the Ngorongoro Crater?+
No — there are no overnight facilities on the crater floor. All lodges are on the crater rim (approx. 2,300m altitude) or outside the conservation area. The rim lodges have spectacular views and allow you to be early into the crater.
How do you combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti?+
Most travellers plan 1 full day in the Ngorongoro Crater and 3–4 days in the Serengeti. You drive via the Naabi gate from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti (approx. 1.5 hours). We arrange this seamlessly — you just have to get in.
Is the Ngorongoro Crater suitable for children?+
Absolutely. The crater is one of the most child-friendly safari locations in Africa: compact, high chance of sightings, and no Great Migration crowd risk. Children of all ages are welcome. Jonas adapts the pace and explanation accordingly.
What is the best period for the Ngorongoro Crater?+
Unlike the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round. Our preference: June–October for the dry season and January–February for the fewest crowds with the best rhino chances. The crater rim is always cooler than the Serengeti (5–15°C at night).
