Tanzania safari for seniors — why age is no barrier

Allard·10 April 2026·7 min read

I regularly receive the same question from people aged 65, 70 or 75: "Is a Tanzania safari still something for us at this age?"

My answer: it is more often suited to seniors than to families with young children.

Here is why — and what to approach differently.

Why a Tanzania safari is ideal for seniors

A safari is fundamentally a seated activity. You ride in a comfortable 4x4 with well-sprung seats, with a roof hatch for better observation. You don't need to walk, climb or run. The pace is whatever you want it to be.

Our oldest guest so far: a gentleman of 84 from Rotterdam, with a hip prosthesis and hearing aid. He did ten days of Tanzania and Zanzibar. On the return journey to Arusha he told Jonas that this was the most beautiful trip of his life. That Jonas knew more about Tanzania than he could ever have learned. That he wished he had done this twenty years earlier.

That is the kind of feedback we receive most often from our older guests.

What we do differently for seniors

*Pace and planning*

We plan fewer stops but longer at each interesting sighting. No rush, no time pressure. Once you have found a leopard in a tree, we can comfortably stay beside it for an hour while having coffee.

Game drives are adapted: no 05:30 wake-up call unless desired. We start at 07:00 and return for a midday lunch, followed by a comfortable afternoon rest. The second drive starts at 15:30.

*Accommodation*

For seniors we always recommend mid-range or luxury accommodation with a private bathroom at step-free or easy walking distance from central facilities. No extensive stair-climbing, no winding paths through dense bush.

Modern safari lodges are mostly accessible: wide paths, well-lit corridors, comfortable beds at a reasonable height. Ask us specifically about accommodations known for their accessibility.

*Medical considerations*

Discuss with your GP before departure: malaria prophylaxis, vaccinations and how to manage medication in Tanzania.

Arusha has good medical facilities (AICC Hospital and private clinics). In the parks medical care is limited, but evacuation by aircraft (AMREF Flying Doctors) is always available in emergencies.

Always carry a medical summary in English — including medications, allergies and blood type. We ensure the guide is informed of this.

*Flight and time difference*

Tanzania is 2 hours ahead of the Netherlands in winter, 1 hour in summer. Jet lag is minimal.

The direct flight from Amsterdam is approx. 9 hours (KLM). For seniors we recommend: - Fly business class if budget allows — the extra comfort on arrival is worth it - Book a one-night stopover at a Nairobi or Doha hotel if the flight is long or tiring - Plan the first day in Arusha as a rest day, not an arrival-and-drive-immediately day

The best parks for seniors

*Ngorongoro Crater*

The ideal park for seniors: compact, self-contained environment where you never need to leave the vehicle. 25,000+ animals in one valley. No long drives between sightings — everything is nearby.

*Tarangire*

Large numbers of elephants in a relatively small area. Quieter than the Serengeti, just as impressive. Well-maintained roads.

*Lake Manyara*

Compact (330 km²), varied and surprising. Ideal as a half-day trip — less tiring than a full day in the Serengeti.

*Serengeti*

Absolutely doable, but choose the central Seronera zone for shorter driving times. The northern zone requires longer transfers which can be tiring.

Zanzibar as a finale

For seniors Zanzibar as the safari finale is ideal. Rest on the beach, no pressured programme. Explore Stone Town at your own pace. Snorkelling at Mnemba is also possible if you are fit enough in the water.

Our offering for seniors

We do not offer a separate "senior package" — that sounds condescending and is not necessary. What we offer is a fully personalised approach where we adapt the pace, accommodation and game drive times to your condition and wishes.

When making your request, tell us your physical condition, which medications you take and any limitations. We arrange the rest.

Tanzania awaits you — at any age.
