Tanzania by month — the honest calendar for your safari

There is no bad month — but there are better choices

The most frequently asked question I get: "When is the best time to go to Tanzania?"

The short answer: there is no bad month. But depending on what you want to see and how you travel, some months are better than others.

Here is my honest calendar — without marketing talk.

---

January: warmth, births and quiet

Weather: warm and humid, short rain showers possible Wildlife highlight: calving season in Ndutu begins — up to 10,000 wildebeest births per day Crowds: low-medium Price: mid-range

January is a hidden gem. Most tourists avoid it because of the rain — but the rain usually falls as short showers, not all day. The green landscape is beautiful. And the calving season in Ndutu is one of the most special experiences in Tanzania.

---

February: the best month for Ndutu

Weather: similar to January, sometimes drier Wildlife highlight: calving season at its peak — mass births, lions and cheetahs in Ndutu Crowds: low Price: low-medium

If I had to choose one month for people who really want to see nature — not the full Serengeti experience, but the rawest wildlife moments — I choose February. Ndutu is at its peak. You see births, you see predators hunting, you see a generation beginning.

---

March: transition, fewer tourists

Weather: start of the long rainy season (masika), more rain Wildlife highlight: migration starts moving northward; baby animals everywhere Crowds: low Price: low

March is unpredictable. More rain, sometimes impassable roads. But also: almost no tourists. Lower prices. Baby animals. If you are willing to deal with some rain and mud, March offers an intimate experience you will never have in August.

---

April: rainy season, adventure for the adventurer

Weather: heavy rain, roads sometimes poor Wildlife highlight: animals spread through green plains; less predictable Crowds: very low Price: lowest of the year

April is for the real adventurer. Some lodges close. Some roads are impassable. But the Serengeti in green — with flowers, baby animals and empty tracks — is breathtakingly beautiful. Bird watchers love April.

---

May: the season turns

Weather: slowly getting drier, sometimes still showers Wildlife highlight: migration moving northward; Serengeti becoming more active Crowds: low Price: low-medium

May is when the season turns. The rain retreats, the plains dry up, animals move to water sources. It is not yet high season — but clearly heading that way.

---

June: the dry season begins — my favourite

Weather: dry, pleasant, cool mornings Wildlife highlight: migration arrives in western Serengeti (Grumeti River); first river crossings Crowds: medium rising Price: mid to high

June is for me the best combination of everything: dry enough to drive, green enough to be beautiful, active enough, quiet enough not to be overwhelmed with vehicles. And the first Grumeti River crossings begin.

---

July–August: the absolute peak

Weather: dry, cool, perfect safari conditions Wildlife highlight: major Mara River crossings; maximum wildlife density Crowds: highest of the year Price: highest of the year

This is the moment everyone wants. The Mara River crossings are at their peak. Wildlife concentrations are at their maximum. And the parks are also busier than ever.

Advice: if you go in July–August, book at least 8 months in advance. The best lodges fill quickly. And plan at least 3 full days in the northern Serengeti for the Mara crossing — crossings are unpredictable.

---

September: peak for predators

Weather: dry, warm Wildlife highlight: migration starts returning south; predators at their most active Crowds: high Price: high

September is sometimes more enjoyable than August. The migration retreats from Kenya and the crocodiles and lions follow. Predator activity is at its maximum — the dry season has concentrated animals at water sources, making lions and leopards easier to find.

---

October: quiet and pleasant

Weather: slowly getting drier after the first rains Wildlife highlight: migration back in southern Serengeti; elephants at Tarangire Crowds: low-medium Price: medium

October is an underrated month. The parks are quieter. Tarangire has enormous elephant concentrations (driest period still). The migration is back in the Serengeti. Perfect month for people who want both peace and action.

---

November: the short rainy season

Weather: short rainy season (vuli), showers but not all day Wildlife highlight: first rains bring green grass; migration departs south; baby animals of other species Crowds: low Price: low-medium

November is like January — a hidden gem. Short rain showers, a beautifully green landscape, few tourists. Baby impalas, Thomson's gazelles and other species are born.

---

December: holidays and Christmas in Africa

Weather: warm, sometimes short rains Wildlife highlight: migration in the south; calving season beginning to prepare Crowds: high around Christmas/New Year, quiet in early December Price: high around Christmas, medium in early December

December has two faces. Early December: quiet, cheaper, pleasant. Christmas and New Year: busier and more expensive — popular for luxury trips. If you go in December: avoid Christmas week if you want to avoid crowds.

My summary

| Goal | Best months | |------|------------| | Great migration & river crossings | June–August | | Calving season & predators | January–February | | Budget & peace | March–May | | Perfect balance | June, October | | Bird watching | November–March |

There is no perfect month — only the month that best fits what you are looking for.
